2012 Sydney Royal Australorp Judges Report
I wish to thank the Australorp Club of Australia Inc for nominating me the judge the Australorp classes at the 2012 Sydney Royal.
This is how I saw them on Judging Day - Thursday 5th April 2012.
Large Black Australorps:
Cocks: 1st place A magnificent specimen of the breed, he was moulting out in the neck, but clearly the best large male Australorp at the show.
2nd and 3rd Nowhere near the winner and not up to the class.
Hens: Only two and both disappointing and not really fit fowls.
Cockerels: 1st: The only cockerel that was typey, young, but poor in the toes
2nd: Ever so slightly swinging tail and had a smidgen of light in the legs. Eyes too lightly coloured.
3rd: Lovely head but way too flat in the backline.
Pullets:
1st: I put this one up because she was in very good condition and was true to type, and a fit fowl.
2nd: This was clearly the best female in the class, but I couldn’t put her up as she had too much black under the soles of her feet.
3rd: Not a bad pullet, but not what I would class as a fit fowl.
4th: Not laying, and showed her immaturity - will improve with age.
5th: A worthy pullet
6th: Worthy type, curled toes cost her a higher place.
Large Blue Australorps:
Cockerels: 1st was magnificent type, but he did tend to swing his tail.
2nd: Wasn’t fit
Pullets: 1st, 2nd and 3rd All very similar, but not one of them displayed any fitness or real life.
Overall the first two Large Black Pullets were much better than the males, but the Black Cock bird pushed them all the way.
Large Trios: The wining trio here was clearly the best, the other trios seemed well out of it compared to the winners.
Bantam Black Australorps:
Cock: 1st was not a bad bird and true to type.
Hen: 1st was just not fit, not a lot more to say.
Cockerels: 1st: Lovely type, great on feet, held a good top line, good backline, and I would call him a “little toy”. He was a beauty.
2nd: Good cockerel but too upright in the toes.
3rd: Good top line, well shown, but up on his toes
Pullets: 1st: Excellent top line, lovely eye, stunning beetle green sheen.
2nd: Not as good under the feet as the winner. Tended to flatten off a little.
3rd: Good top line, well shown and great sheen
Bantam Blue Australorps:
One only Blue Cock and he was far too large. Not impressed.
Bantam Trios: The wining trio here was clearly the best - they were selected well balanced. 2nd placed trio were far younger.
Overall the winning Bantam was the Black Cockerel. He was well shown magnificently and well pushed by the winning black pullet who was also shown professionally. I had no hesitation in choosing them as my Champion and Reserve Champion Australorps, respectively, as they clearly outshone the large specimens at this show.
Thanks to my steward, Chris White, and to the Sydney Royal Poultry Show Committee
